How a 50-person consultancy outranked the global giants of M&E engineering

Whitecode are M&E and building services engineers. Around 50 people strong, specialists to the core, and working on some of the most recognisable projects in London. Their competition? Firms like Arup, WSP, AECOM, Mott MacDonald and Atkins - each 100x+ their size, with global offices, multi-million-pound marketing budgets and decades of brand authority. When Whitecode came to Fabrick, the ambition was clear: compete for real commercial keywords against firms forty times bigger. Five years into the partnership, the scoreboard tells the story. Whitecode now ranks #1 on Google for BREEAM assessment, BREEAM consultant, MEP design services, MEP consultants UK, top building services consultants and building sustainability consultant. Not page one. Number one.

A 50-person specialist versus firms 100x the size

In UK building services engineering, the search battleground is dominated by global names. Arup alone has 19,000 staff and has been publishing technical content for decades. WSP has 70,000 employees. AECOM, 51,000. Mott MacDonald, 20,000. These firms had every structural advantage on Google: enormous content libraries, authoritative backlink profiles, dedicated digital teams, and brand signals that took generations to build. Whitecode had expertise, ambition, and the kind of technical credibility that specifiers respect - but an organic footprint that didn't reflect either. The question wasn't whether Whitecode could compete on quality. It was whether a specialist consultancy could be discoverable in a SERP ruled by giants.

A full-service SEO partnership: website, content, technical, and links

This wasn't an on-page optimisation exercise - it was a multi-year partnership built across every lever that moves rankings. We delivered a new Whitecode website built from the ground up for technical SEO, commercial intent and long-form content architecture. We worked with Whitecode's subject-matter experts to produce thought leadership on the topics their specifiers actually search for: BREEAM compliance, Part R gigabit infrastructure, BS 9991 electrical design, UK energy infrastructure risk, MEP design for mixed-use developments. Technical SEO sharpened site structure, internal linking, page speed and schema markup. A sustained link-building programme built authority through the industry publications architects, developers and asset owners actually read. Quality over quantity, depth over breadth. Every output shaped by the partnership between Whitecode's engineering authority and Fabrick's digital strategy.
